Project Overview
Retaining wall reconstruction on Riverview Drive in Perth Amboy, NJ restored a roadway that was at real risk. The existing retaining walls were failing quickly, and the client needed them reinforced fast. Pillari delivered a complete solution, from the culvert below to the new road surface on top.
A Road at Risk
When the client brought the project to Pillari, the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls along Riverview Drive were deteriorating. Failing walls put the roadway above them in danger, so time mattered.
Renewing the Culvert from the Inside
Beneath the road ran an existing 72″ corrugated metal pipe. Instead of digging it out and replacing it, Pillari slip lined it with a new 60″ Spirolite steel-reinforced HDPE pipe. Slip lining places a new pipe inside the old one, renewing the line with far less excavation.
Replacing the Walls
Pillari removed the failing MSE walls and installed a new Reinforced Earth T-Wall system. T-Wall is built from stacked precast concrete units that work together with the soil behind them to hold back the slope.
Building a Safe Roadway Edge
New precast parapets were set along the top of the wall. Pillari also built cast-in-place concrete moment slabs, which anchor the parapets and help the wall resist the loads from traffic above. The project finished with a new hot mix asphalt (HMA) roadway.
The Result
Riverview Drive now has stable new retaining walls, a renewed culvert and a fresh road surface. It shows how Pillari brings structural, drainage and roadway work together to solve an urgent infrastructure problem.
